1779: Spain Enter war against Britain
The Spanish started helping the colonists in 1776 by smuggling gunpowder to the colonists through some of Spain's colonies, for example Havana Previously the Spanish had sustained losses to the British when they where at war with the British over territory. In 1777, the Spanish court granted the rebels admission to the rich port of Havana. The Spanish also gave the rebels three thousand barrels of gunpowder from Bilbao.
By June 1779 the Spanish declared war on the British, in alliance with the rebels. The Spanish had joined the French and the rebels. The Spanish main ways of harming the British was over water by attacking the British fleets heading towards America, They managed to capture fleets of soldiers and supplies. In the West Indies the Spanish where mainly trying to prevent the British from taking Cuba. The Spanish also tried to retake Florida. The Spanish also helped The colonists in the fight for the American Midwest.
The Spanish managed to maintain Minorca (an island situated beside Mallorca) and West Florida. The envolvement of The Spanish the Americans revolutionary war was considered successful. The war also reduced the threat of the British attacking the Spanish colonies in the Caribbean. After the war Spain remained well acquainted with America for numerous years.
